Destiny 2: can you get your old, sunset guns back after The Final Shape comes out?

Let the Nails Ring, and let Bygones be Bygones.

Years after it happened, Bungie is finally undoing the last vestiges of its sunsetting drama in the modern Destiny 2 meta. With the Power System being revamped, all of our sunset weapons are relevant again in The Final Shape, but can you get them back if you previously dismantled them?

The answer isn’t as straightforward as you might think, actually. In some cases, you can get your legacy Destiny 2 weapons back even after you’ve dismantled them, but this won’t be possible in many situations. “We understand that many old Power limited items have been dismantled by this point,” Bungie admits. “We regret that we have no recovery mechanism for these,” the announcement continues. This is particularly relevant because, back when sunsetting was first announced for Destiny 2, Bungie specifically said that it was safe to dismantle sunset gear, as it would never be “un-sunset” again.

If you, too, now feel a bit bummed about getting rid of certain pieces of legacy kit, there’s hope on the horizon, as Bungie also said that “Going forward, we intend to reintroduce sources for most or all of [the sunset weapons], updated to modern Destiny sandbox standards with added properties such as Origin Traits and buildcrafting perks.” With that all out of the way, how does one go about reclaiming their old, dismantled weapons in Destiny 2?

Can you get back your sunset gear in Destiny 2 if you deleted it?

Yes! Provided that it’s a Year 1 fixed-roll weapon. Simply visit your Collections UI and see if you have access to any of Destiny 2‘s original weapon drops. As long as you originally farmed at least one example of a weapon of this type, you’ll be able to reclaim copies of it indefinitely. The same applies to all Pursuit and Pinnacle weapons, mind, which were fairly potent fixed rolls coming out over the course of subsequent years. Note that Pursuit and Pinnacle weapons can still be purchased via the Monument to Lost Lights, so those aren’t out of reach for newcomers, either!

Broadly, there are two types of sunset weapons in Destiny 2:

  • Year 1 fixed-roll weapons
  • Year 2 (and beyond) random roll weapons

Fixed roll weapons from Year 1 are notable because of two reasons: firstly, they came with no random Perk rolls of any sort, meaning they would always drop in the same form as they would the first time. Secondly, they only had one Perk included, with the classic Leviathan Raid weapons getting two Perks exclusively. This means Year 1 fixed-roll weapons are objectively weaker than anything else in the current meta, however, they can be regained via the Collections UI, which cannot be done with random-roll Year 2 and beyond items.

Should you have kept sunset weapons around, after all?

Keeping all of the above in mind, some Destiny 2 players who stuck around from the days of Forsaken and Beyond Light are bound to be sorry that they dismantled their old gear back when Bungie said it was safe to do so when sunsetting was first announced. The good (and bad, depending on how you look at it) news is that none of the old, previously sunset items will be meta when they’re back in action, so you shouldn’t feel too sorry about dismantling them.

The weapons we mentioned above – Ringing Nail, Bygones, Trophy Hunter, Patron of Lost Causes, etc. – simply won’t be competitive with the latest and greatest gear Bungie has released since. Partially due to stat differences, yes, but gear sets such as Brave weapons come with incredibly powerful Perk combinations and Origin Traits, to boot. Remember: Bungie isn’t going to update old weapons to make them relevant again. Instead, they just won’t be power-capped, meaning you can take them wherever you please. Should you be doing that, though? Likely not, considering how overpowered in comparison the newer kit is. Am I still going to be taking my Dragonfly/Rampage Ringing Nail into every single mission I drop into, though? Oh, you bet.
