DICE laid out a new roadmap for Battlefield 2042 today, and it includes a deeper look at its Specialist system. In today’s update, Electronic Arts and DICE confirm they’re going to rework Specialists, bringing them more in line with classic Battlefield classes.

As part of the August 2022 Development Update, the Battlefield 2042 team talks about some of the work ahead for the first-person shooter. This includes map reworks and Vault Weapons, as well as new content. But the first chunk of the update talks about something a bit further off: a rework of the Specialists.

Specialists were a new addition to 2042, having players take on specific characters that loosely aligned with traditional Battlefield roles. With this new update, planned for Season 3 later on this year, the existing roster of Specialists will go into one of four roles. The four Classes are the Assault, Recon, Support, and Engineer roles.

With Classes comes new restrictions, as well as new Class Traits. Weapons will still be open for anyone to use.

DICE says in its new blog that this will address difficulty in assessing just what a player can do when encountered, or what teammates can do, in Battlefield 2042. Support characters will always have a Defibrillator, for example, and Engineers will always have a Repair Tool. Classes can also choose between different gadgets to deploy with; Assault, for example, can pick between a Smoke Grenade Launcher, C5 Explosives, or an IBA Armor Plate.

Building a better force

Specialists will still have their Trait and Gadget, it seems, but this will make the tools a bit more universal across the board. All of this is planned for Season 3, which is still a ways away.

In the nearer future with Season 2, which DICE plans on revealing soon, there will be a new map and Specialist inbound. There will also be new hardware, Battle Pass, and more. It seems like Battlefield 2042 is set on overcoming its launch struggles. We’ll see how the classes shake out once Season 3 rolls around.
